|
“In recognition of his inspirational role in leading his people in South Africa towards freedom and justice, his courageous non-violent stand against the evils of apartheid and his spiritual example to oppressed peoples everywhere. Above all we are recognising his human qualities: his courage and enthusiasm, his intellectual vigour and wit, his gentle care and compassion and his resilience in the face of adversity.” |

|
On the 4th May 1990 he celebrated Mass at St.Mary’s prior to being given the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Lewisham at Goldsmith’s College. |
