In the 1970‘s Desmond Tutu lived with his family in Chinbrook Road while a curate at St Augustine’s Grove Park. His four children all attended local schools.

“In recognition of his inspirational role in leading his people in South Africa towards freedom and justice, his courageous non-violent stand against the evils of apartheid and his spiritual example to oppressed peoples everywhere. Above all we are recognising his human qualities: his courage and enthusiasm, his intellectual vigour and wit, his gentle care and compassion and his resilience in the face of adversity.”

On the 4th May 1990 he celebrated Mass at St.Mary’s prior to being given the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Lewisham at Goldsmith’s College.
